  Biblical Principles to Capturing the Spiritual Hearts of Children

I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.”  (2 Timothy 1:5)

Charles Swindoll had a friend who was raised by a Christian mother that knew the value of a godly upbringing. When he was still just a young baby she would sing him to sleep at night, not singing little ditties and lullabies, but singing the hymns and other songs that speak of the Christian faith.  From the crib until he left home, she made sure he knew the truths of God’s Word, which were so powerfully proclaimed in hymns such as “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.”

I would propose to you that many a Christian mother has been used by the Lord to plant spiritual seeds that the Holy Spirit has used to bring many to Christ. Just what are some Biblical principals that can be lived out that can capture the spiritual heart of your children?

She will ask herself the most important question

God’s Word is full of instructions on how to live in such a way that could enable your children to enjoy the abundant life promised in Christ.  Influential mothers who want to capture the hearts of their children for Christ, take to heart what is written in Philippians 2:3 and 5, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.  Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.”

The best thing a mother can do for her children and family is to let the humility of Christ flow in and through her.  A Christian mother who has been taught of the Lord on how to apply this principle in raising of her children will know the joy of sacrificial living.   She has been taught of the Lord the difference between working to get ahead in life and of working for the good of the family–especially for her children’s eternal future. This Christian mother will train, equip and care for herself in a way that benefits the family.  A mother of godly influence works to keep herself healthy, alert and well equipped for the work God has laid before her.

She will ask herself the most important question, “Will this or that ensure a Christian upbringing of our children or will it keep us too busy for the things of God? Many a Christian mother has done without in order to enjoy the pleasure of sacrificial love, doing what it takes to ensure that her children are being brought up in the faith as Timothy’s mother and grandmother had done.

E. Buffalo spoke so appreciative of his mother’s sensitivity to his need to know about the things of God, and especially her need of living a God fearing life before her children. She made the time to teach him to pray and made sure he had what he needed to learn about the Lord Jesus. She denied herself certain pleasures in order to have the finances and especially the time to help oversee the spiritual training of her children. When he grew up he did what many have done, he walked away from the teachings and the Christian example of his mother.  After being beaten to the point of unconsciousness, he found himself lying in the hospital bed in a Juvenile Hall in California, scared to death.  It was at that time he remembered the teaching of his mother about prayer and the Word of God, thus, he prayed a real heartfelt prayer to receive Christ as Savior and Lord. He is now a pastor of a church and he makes this plea to all mothers on this Mother’s Day, “Mothers, [be sensitive to your children’s need of] turning off the television and worldly distractions and make the time to plant seeds [that the Holy Spirit can use to lead your children to Christ].   [Lay a] foundation that will cause them to consider Christ.”

Influential Mothers are Supportive

Influential mothers are sensitive to the spiritual needs of their children and they will sacrifice self to plant those seeds. They are also mothers who are supportive.  Proverbs 15:4 says, The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life…”  One of our modern day Bible translations puts it this way, “Kind words bring life but cruel words crush the spirit.” A Christian mother will take to heart the fact that she must surrender to the Holy Spirit’s prompting to be supportive in her speech.  Kids can be ruthless and they can hear words from other kids that tear them down.  The last thing your child needs to hear when they come home is “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” That’s not true.  A broken bone heals faster than a broken spirit.  Mothers who are under the control of the Holy Spirit will see failures as opportunities for giving words that can heal.

I once saw a Peanuts cartoon.  A little red-haired girl calls Charlie Brown on the phone and says, “Hey, Chuck, guess what?  I am running for Queen of the month of May at our school.”  Charlie says, “That is interesting, Lucy has already been chosen Queen of May at our school.  She is standing here right now wearing her crown.”   Instead of congratulating Lucy, the little re-haired girl, tears Lucy down to build herself up and says, “Your school has pretty low standards, Chuck!”   As you watch the cartoon play out, you see Charlie Brown looking at Lucy with a sense of compassion and saying, “Lucy, she says Congratulations.”

There are a lot of things that are going to happen in the lives of your children that are going to cause them to realize that they do not measure up to other people’s standards and they are going to realize that they have a lot of maturing to do to be able to achieve what God has for them down the road.  That is when they need to hear words of support from mom. Christian mothers take these times to tell their children who they can be in Christ, that every child of God has Holy Spirit gifts that will enable them to do great things with the Lord that will endure forever. There is no greater feeling than to see our children discover their Holy Spirit given gifts and watch the Lord mature the exercise of those gifts.  It may be the gift of helps, showing compassion, music, preaching and teaching the Word of God, or any of the other twenty-one gifts that the Holy Spirit may give them.  When children find their identity in Christ and what He has called them to do, they overcome the anxiety and the frustration that can come with trying to measure up to everyone’s standards.

Influential Mothers are Sympathetic

Christian mothers have the promise of positive influence through being supportive and sympathetic.  Romans 12:15 says, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.”   Holy Spirit led mothers share in the rejoicing and mourning of their children.

One of our most respected men in America, President Ronald Regan was known and appreciated for his expressions of emotions.  In the moments of national tragedy, when the shuttle was destroyed, when our men were killed in Lebanon he cried openly.  It is a proven fact that strong trusted leaders are not afraid to express their emotions and often whereas weak leaders often show little emotion, especially over the joys and hurts of others. Jesus is our example, he wept with those who wept (John 11:35) and he rejoiced over the salvation of Zacchaeus. (Luke 19:9)

The most influential mothers are those who grieve when their children grieve and rejoice when their children are rejoicing.  A few years ago I had the privilege to meet Pastor Don McMinn.  He wrote a Bible study titled, 11th Commandment.  While teaching “Comfort One Another” he shared the testimony of a time when his mother’s tears really comforted him.  Several weeks before he started first grade Don broke his ankle.  His dad rescued him and took him home.  His dad figured that it was just badly sprained so he did not take Don to the hospital until the next day.  Don’s mom was working late at the grocery store and it was somewhat late into the night before he saw his mother.  When she walked into his bedroom Don was crying.  The first words out of his mother’s mouth were not “How did this happen” or “Dad, why didn’t you take Don to the hospital?”  Rather her first words came with tears, “Oh, sweetheart, I’m so sorry.”  Her words so comforted him. Pastor Don’s great Bible study on the “One Anothers in Scripture” reflect the powerful effect that Dr. Don McMinn’s Christian mother had on him as he was growing up. A Christian mother’s life has a powerful effect on her children.  

Influential Mothers are Straightforward

Influential mothers are sympathetic, yet there are times they must be “Straightforward.”    Proverbs 27:6 says “Wounds from a friend can be trusted…”  

Sometimes, mothers need to be candid and frank, leveling with their children, telling them when they are blowing it, when they are letting the sins of the flesh, the lures of the world and the lies of Satan overcome them.  Christian mothers call sin, sin! Many of you have seen the bumper sticker that says “Real friends don’t let friends drive drunk.” A friend will step in front of an intoxicated driver and say, “You are about to make a big mistake and you are endangering not only yourself, but those around you as well.”  An influential mother will warn a child and do all they can to stop their children from driving through life under the influence of the flesh, the world and the devil. No one wants a physician who will sugar coat the problem, but will spell out the heart disease and has the courage to say, “You need surgery or you are going to die.”  Influential mothers will spell out the spiritual heart disease, surrender their children over to the Great Physician and ask Him to do whatever it takes to cleanse their child’s heart of those blockages that are keeping or draining the spiritual life out of their children.

Influential Mothers are Spontaneous 

Influential Mothers are not only straightforward but also must be “Spontaneous.” Galatians 6:10 says “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”  This passage of Scripture has a phrase that must be noted, “…as we have opportunity…”  All mothers are very much aware of the term, “Teachable Moments.”

Influential Mothers prayerfully look for opportunities to do good to their children, especially opportunities which can cause their children to think and live Biblically.  Instead of being influenced by their peers, Christian mothers help their children compare what their friends want them to do with what the Bible says.  Some children were given a movie to watch and were told that it was a pretty good film.  The film by the whole of its teaching taught values contrary to Biblical truth. Their mother took the time to show her children how to compare what was in the film to what God’s Word says is truth. In order to keep their children from being polluted by the world view through movies, books, video games, music and friends.  Influential mothers will stir their children’s minds and hearts to what God’s Word says.  Through the Holy Spirit inspired written Word, God’s instructions are,  “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. (Philippians 4:8)

Influential mothers seize the moment to get their children to ask these questions, “Is what I about to do causing me to meditate upon the Lord’s will for me?  Is what I am watching, reading and doing grieving to the Holy Spirit of God? Influential mothers seize the opportunity to stir their children to God’s Word in the selecting of friends by giving warning of what the Bible says, “Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” (1 Corinthians 15:33) Influential mothers take every opportunity possible to implant in the minds and heart of their children that they are to be “Holy Spirit-filled, Word Minded Christians” and as they grow older, their hearts will be changed and influenced by the desire to find God’s good and perfect will for them.

Mothers who raise their children as Timothy’s mother and grandmother did, will find God’s Holy Spirit working in the lives of their children.  Those children will be moved upon by God and be given every opportunity to have a vibrant walk with Jesus Christ. It must be remembered that every child must make up his own mind about his own relationship with Christ. Mothers will not be held accountable to the decision made by their children. However, they will give an accounting to how well they lived the Christian principles discussed in this message today. Influential mothers know the joy and fulfillment that comes with rejoicing and mourning with their children. They also have the courage to Biblically correct and guide their children. They are spontaneous in their teaching, and seize every opportunity to get their children to think Biblically.

The Christian herald ran the story of a Confederate chaplain who was visiting with a wounded solider. When it came time to pray, the chaplain was surprised that the wounded soldier did not make the usual request which was to petition God for a speedy recovery. The request was a prayer of thankfulness for his mother. The soldier wanted prayer of only praise and gratitude to God for giving him a Christian mother who had so much influence in his life that caused him to consider Christ. Praise to the Lord that God enabled him to appreciate the sacrifice his mother made for him in prayer, making sure that he had the teaching of God’s Word and especially for living a God fearing life before him. Not long after the prayer of praise, the soldier died. However, but as the soldier died he ask the chaplain to contact his mother and be sure to let her know he died a Christian.

Our children will face many battles that threaten their eternal souls.  Therefore, they need mothers who have a Biblical influence. Mothers, God’s Word holds a promise for all who will through faith in Christ strive to obey the teaching of Jesus.  God says He will show His love to a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments. (Exodus 20:6)  Mothers, the Holy Spirit urges you to strive to grasp the spiritual heart of your children.

Saving Grace

Once Upon A Time

        In 1725 to be exact, a little boy was born and was named John.  His sailor father was gone to sea for long periods of time leaving John’s mother to raise him.  She was a kind, God-fearing woman who loved him dearly and endeavored to raise him in the love of the Lord, faithfully teaching him the Word of God.  John had a wonderful childhood until age seven when his mother died. John’s father soon remarried and, although his new wife was probably not quite of the Cinderella and Snow White evil stepmother variety, she had neither love nor time for this little boy.  There were no more prayer times or Scripture readings before bed.  There were no more tender hugs or words of encouragement.  John was left to fend for himself and took to running the streets.  By age 11, he was going to sea with his harsh and distant father.  The immoral and salty-tongued sailors became his companions, and he soon became just like them.  In a few years, John had his own ship and was profiting greatly in the West African slave-trafficking business.  He was a hardened unbeliever, profane in speech and utterly  immoral.

Occasionally, his conscience would prick him as he would remember his mother’s love and prayers for him.  At such times, John would diligently resolve to “live better”, to read his Bible and pray.  But, a sin-hardened and unrepentant heart finds no peace even in these things, and he would quickly give up. Then, on a night of terror in 1748, John had to face his mortality squarely.  A hellish tempest-tossed sea of 30-foot waves became his deadly enemy.  For ten days a ferocious storm raged so mightily that he despaired of his very life.  Before his eyes, a seaman was swept off the deck to his death.  John lashed himself to the deck so he would not suffer a similar fate.  During this time, he remembered a Scripture his mother had taught him. In Proverbs 1: 24-31 God says, “But since you rejected me when I called… I, in turn, will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you — when calamity overtakes you like a storm…”  This is not the most comforting verse for a hardened sinner and God-hater to remember when he is facing death! 

 The storm did eventually pass, however, with the ship and John being spared.  It was just a matter of time, too, before John, under the conviction of the Holy Spirit, repented of his sin-filled life, asked for forgiveness and received mercy and grace from the Lord Jesus Christ.  He became a “new creature” in Christ. Oh, did I tell you?  You may sort of know John.  His full name is John Newton, and later in life he wrote these familiar words, – “Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me.  I once was lost but now am found,  was blind, but now I see!”

NO sinner is too wicked for the love and forgiveness  of the Lord Jesus Christ to cleanse and save his soul… not John Newton… not me… not you.

 Hell-shaking Prayer Warriors

2 Corinthians 10: 4 says, “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.”

Hell-shaking prayers

In today’s message I will be referring a lot to the prophet Daniel.  Few people in Scripture exhibit the faith, courage and prayerfulness  seen constantly in the life of Daniel.  This faithful prophet of God prayed hell-shaking prayers and set the example for us on how to be a Body of Christ that enrages the devil. I would propose to you that the Word of God tells us to consider the life of great men and women of God who have lived a life of faith, ordinary people who did great things in the work of the Lord. (Hebrews 13:7; 11; Barnes Notes; The Expositors Bible Commentary)

Just what is seen in the life of Christians who exhibit the life of prayer that Daniel did?

A genuine faith in prayer

The first step to having a church that prays hell-shaking prayers is to have a pastor and spiritual leaders who are men that exhibit a genuine faith in prayer.  Daniel 2:17-19 says, Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends… He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery… During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven and said:  ‘Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are His. He changes times and seasons; …you have made known to me what we asked of you, you have made known to us the dream of the king.’” (Daniel 2:17-23)

In this time of history God granted Nebuchadnezzar a remarkable dream that disclosed His plan for the ages to come until the final triumph of Christ.  This king of Babylon was convinced that this dream was not just a passing fancy, but contained a message of the utmost importance. (The Expositors Bible Commentary; Who’s Who in the Bible)  Like all people of the world Nebuchadnezzar puts his trust in other people.  The Bible says he “…summoned the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers…” (Daniel 2:2) If they were able to tell him what the dream was and give him the interpretation of the dream, they would receive gifts, rewards and great honor.  If not they would be killed in a horrible manner. (Daniel 2:5-6)  When the men told Nebuchadnezzar, “There is no man on earth who can do what the king asks…”  and “What the king asks is to difficult…,”  he became furious and ordered the execution of all the wise men including Daniel and his friends. (Daniel 10:10-13)

Daniel spoke with Arioch “…with wisdom and tact.” (Daniel 2:14)  It is believed through proper channels Daniel was granted time. (Barnes Notes; The Expositors Bible Commentary; Thru the Bible)  After receiving permission, “Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends… He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning the mystery…” of the dream.

The cohorts of hell were working through wicked men trying to do away with faithful men of prayer.  Satan longs to destroy anything that has sweet fellowship with God and all that is being labored in towards the Lord’s perfect will.  However, when two or three are agreeing, touching anything upon earth, God will be glorified. (Matthew 18:19) Churches that enrage the devil have men who agree and will unite in prayer expecting God to be merciful. (Thru the Bible; The Expositors Commentary; The Pulpit Commentary) Daniel 2:19 says, “During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision.”  Daniel’s response to the Lord’s revelation was an immediate prayer of detailed praise.  His prayer to the Lord was no halfhearted thank you, but a prayer giving recognition to God’s Sovereignty, recognition of God’s willingness to give wisdom, knowledge and discernment to those who seek Him.  Daniel praises God for knowing all things and revealing to him exactly what was in the dream of the king. (Daniel 2:20-23)

Daniel was taken to King Nebuchadnezzar.  When the king asked Daniel if he could tell him the dream and interpret it, this prophet of God set the record straight.  Daniel said, “No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he asks about, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries…”  Daniel goes on to explain, “As for me, this mystery has been revealed to me, not because I have greater wisdom than other living men, but so that you, O king, may know the interpretation…” (Daniel 2:30)  Here we see a truth that will keep men and women of prayer in a humble state as God gives them revelation.  Christians who enrage the devil in prayer are Christians who know that their testimony about prayer is to bring glory to God.

Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar, “The Great God has shown the king what will take place in the future.  The dream is true and the interpretation is trustworthy.”  (Daniel 2:45)  After Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar what the dream was and then interpreted it, the king became humble before God. The Bible says, “Then king Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate…  The king said to Daniel, ‘Surely your God is the God of all gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you were able to reveal this mystery.’”

Spiritual leaders and people of the church who engage in prayer which demolishes strongholds and defeats everything that sets itself up against the work of the Lord are Christians who spend the same amount of energy praising God for answered prayer as they do in petitions seeking God’s intervention.  They will be used of God to reveal to others that the Lord God is the only God.

Read the writing on the wall

Churches that enrage the devil have Christians who express a lifestyle that shows a genuine faith in prayer for God’s glory, and they have spiritual leaders that can read the writing on the wall.  Daniel 5:12 says, “…Call for Daniel, and he will tell you what the writing means.” (Daniel 5:12)

At this time of history King Belshazzar was overseeing the city of Babylon.  He chose to show contempt to the true God by bringing in the gold and silver goblets that were taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so he, his nobles, his wives and his concubines may drink wine from them while they praised their Babylon-idols. His purpose of heart was to insult the God of Israel while worshiping the gods of Babylon.  (Daniel 5:2-4; Matthew Henry’s Commentary; The Bible knowledge commentary; Commentary on the Old Testament)

Belshazzar well understood what crime he was committing. Among the heathens of his time it was considered religious irreverence to take a vessel that was dedicated to one god and use it to worship other gods or make common use of it. (Barnes Notes; The Bible Knowledge Commentary)   Throughout Biblical history, the Lord has let frolic slide, but He often deals directly with that which attacks His honor.  This irreverence caused God to give a visitation, thus setting the record straight. This visitation, a sign of judgment, came in a way that clearly showed the offender that this was not the work of some man attending the banquet, but was the work signed by the Divine hand, the One who Belshazzar was purposely degrading. (Barnes Notes; Dr. Lightfoot)  This visitation struck such fear in Belshazzar that “His face turned pale… and… his knees knocked together and gave way.” (Daniel 5:6) The Bible says, “Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall…” (Daniel 5:5) Belshazzar knew this was a serious message and wanted to know the contents.  He “…called out for the enchanters, astrologers and diviners…”   Whoever could read the writing and give its meaning would be held in high honor and given the third highest office in the land. (Daniel 5:7)

When God’s judgment is being observed by those involved in offending the Lord, people start looking for answers.  When America was attacked by the planes being flown into the World Trade Center people were looking for answers.  As we approach the last days before the second coming of Christ, people are going to naturally be drawn to different teachers to find answers. They will call on people, just like Belshazzar did, people who they think might have some answers, but hearts will not be satisfied and peace will not come because those giving the answers do not have the heart of God nor Divine revelation. The Bible says, “…the king’s wise men could not read the writing or tell them what it meant.  So King Belshazzar became even more terrified and his face grew even more pale.  His nobles were baffled.” (Daniel 5:8)

Once God has given a message, he will raise up men who know Him and seek Him, people of God who will proclaim His message. Daniel 5:10-14 tells us how Daniel, a real man of prayer was seen by those in key positions.  The Bible says, “The queen, hearing the voices of the king and his nobles, came into the banquet hall. ‘…Don’t be alarmed! Don’t look so pale!’”  She said,  “There is a man in your kingdom who has the spirit of the holy gods in him. …This man Daniel… [is] found to have a keen mind and knowledge and understanding, and also the ability to interpret dreams, explain riddles and solve difficult problems. Call for Daniel, and he will tell you what the writing means.”  (Daniel 5:10-14)

Daniel was brought before the king and was promised honor and even the third highest position in the land.  This true man of prayer showed no interest in the gifts and rewards by answering, “…You may keep your gifts for yourself and give rewards to someone else.  Nevertheless, I will read the writing for the king and tell him what it means.”  (Daniel 5:17) Daniel likely refused Belshazzar’s gifts and offer of rewards not out of pride or rudeness but in order to destroy any misconception that God’s service could be bought and to avoid any obligation to the king.  By doing this Daniel would avoid, as a God enlightened proclaimer, every appearance of self-interest in the presence of authority, thus showing them that such a man of God did not regard earthly advantages.  This heart of Daniel is a protection from having any hesitation of declaring truth.  It shows all who hear the message of the Lord that truth will be proclaimed, whether it be pleasing or displeasing. (The New American Commentary; Commentary of the Old Testament;)

Churches who have leaders who are going to be used of God in these last days express the same heart as Daniel did as they serve the Lord Jesus Christ.  The modern day praying church that enrages the devil and is victorious in what the Lord’s calls her to do says, But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him.  For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.  To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life.  And who is equal to such a task? Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, like men sent from God.” (2 Corinthians 2:14-17)

There is a character trait found in the heart of Daniel that is wonderfully presented in Daniel chapter 5.  This must be taken note of if the church is going to have spiritual leaders who are praying Holy Spirit led prayers that kick open the gates of hell.  Daniel 5:24 says, “…the hand that wrote the inscription” came from God.  Dr Lightfoot puts it this way, “That Divine hand which had written the two tablets for a law to his people now writes [His Word] to Belshazzar.” (Matthew Henry Commentary)

Exodus 31:18 says, “When the LORD finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the Testimony, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God.”   (Exodus 31:18)  At least two other places in the Word of God the Ten Commandments are referred to as coming by the finger of God or being referred to as the writing of God. (Exodus 32:15; Deuteronomy 9:10) “The finger of God” is synonymous with divine power or that of coming from Divine operation by which God is making His will known. (The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia; The Pulpit Commentary; The Expositors Bible Commentary; Bible Knowledge Commentary)

Daniel is a prophet of God who walked in step with the will of God.  The Bible portrays him as being distinctly committed and humble.  He rose to the highest governmental position in the administration of three empires and his lifetime spanned the entire period of Judah’s captivity.  The prophet Ezekiel lived at the same time as Daniel and Ezekiel referred to Daniel’s righteousness and wisdom as being great. (Ezekiel 14:14,20; 28:3; The Teacher’s Commentary)

Daniel had a great relationship with God and I believe he knew what his commission was before he even met with the king.  In Daniel 5:18-28 we read of God using this faithful prophet of God to set the record straight and then pronouncing God’s judgment.  He reminded king Belshazzar who had given King Nebuchadnezzar authority, greatness and glory and splendor.  He reminded Belshazzar how people and nations from every language feared Nebuchadnezzar.  He told Belshazzar that when King Nebuchadnezzar became proud, the Lord God dwelt with him until he acknowledged that the Most High God is Sovereign over the kingdoms of men and can set over them anyone He wishes. Daniel then rebukes King Belshazzar directly about the sin of pride and how he directly set himself against the Lord of heaven.  Daniel then gives the meaning of the writings on the wall.

First – “Mene” God had literally numbered the years of his rule and it was now complete.  Not only was his rule over the kingdom finished but also his life. Second – “Tekel” The Counsel of God had determined this and it was found that his moral character was deficient and he had no heart toward repentance.  The Lord had pondered his actions, considered the merits of his case and found him unworthy to be brought into fellowship with Him.  Third – “Peres” The kingdom would be divided and literally rent from him. The spiritual application for today from the Word is:  This is death, judgment and hell.  Those who have not surrendered to the Lordship of Christ through repentance will be found in great want of the Savior forever.  (The truths to the teachings of the meanings of these words “Mene, Tekel and Peres” come from a studying Matthew Henry Commentary; Tyndale Concise Bible; A Commentary, Critical and Explanatory and The New American Commentary)

The church that will be used of God has communion with the Lord in prayer, just like Daniel did and she will have spiritual leaders who will address sin.  They are able to read the writing of God’s Word.  They will know that even though Belshazzar’s particular sins may not be found in this country.  God looks upon the average home in America, a nation that says “In God We Trust” and sees sins that fall under the same category as Belshazzar’s sins did. The handwriting on the wall in the banquet of self-indulgence is first, “Infidelity to Accorded Revelations:” Just as Belshazzar knew of the God’s working in Nebuchadnezzar’s life. (Daniel 5:22)

People in proper authority have been well informed of the fact that this nation was founded and governed by men who had a reverent fear of God.  Second, this nation “Sets Herself Up Against God.”  Some of our governmental officials and even men claiming to be representatives of God are embracing homosexuality, an act that both the Old and New Testament say is a sin.  The idols of inflation’s, profanity – the misuse of God’s Name, sensualism and the love for worldly views are being held higher than what God’s Word says.  This breaks the heart of God just as much as the sins of Belshazzar.  Thirdly, “Failure in Man’s Duty to Glorify God through His Life:” This is manifested through failure to consider God’s view as mankind lives out life.

Steadfast in prayer even if it may cost them their lives

The Church that enrages the devil can read the God’s warnings, disclose sin and proclaim God’s will through the written Word.  She also has leaders who will be steadfast in prayer even if it may cost them their lives.  Daniel 6:10 says, “…Three times a day [Daniel] got on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to God, just as he had done before.”  Daniel’s prayer life got him in some hot water.

By this time in history “…Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators… by his exceptional qualities [the] king had planned to set him over the whole kingdom.  At this the other administrators… tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct in government affairs, but they could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent.  These men said, ‘We will never find any basis for charges against Daniel unless it has something to do against the law of his God.’” (Daniel 6:3-5)

Daniel’s prayer life was well known, so Satan worked a plan through government officials to get a law out that said no one should pray to any god or man for thirty days except to King Darius. (Daniel 6:7)  The penalty to be paid for breaking the law was to be thrown into the lions’ den. (Daniel 6:7) When Daniel learned of the law he went home opened his window that faced Jerusalem and prayed just as he had done before.  His fellow administrators went as a group to the place where they knew they could find Daniel and there he was praying asking for help from God, so they turned him in. (Daniel 6:11) This was just as Jesus’ fellow worker, Judas Iscariot, who had served with Him went and got officials so Jesus could be arrested in the garden of Gethsemane the place where our Lord usually prayed. (Luke 22:39-54)

In these times Christians are discovering the people who are most offended by prayer are public officials, those whom the Bible teaches the church is to have public prayer for. (1 Timothy 2:1-3)  Even though we have public officials doing their best to make it illegal to pray publicly in Jesus’ Name, Christians are still to pray in our Lord’s Name.  The true church has spiritual leaders who will pray in Jesus’ Name and she is a church that enrages the devil.

Daniel paid the price for praying illegally and was thrown into the lions’ den, even though King Darius was determined to rescue him through every effort that could be made. (Daniel 6:14)  Darius was so aware of Daniel’s prayer life to God that when he had Daniel thrown into the lions’ den he said, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!” (Daniel 6:16)    After losing sleep a second night and suffering the consequences for supporting such a horrible law, Darius runs to the lions den to see if God had rescued Daniel. (Daniel 6:18) Daniel’s answer to King Darius was, “…My God sent His angel, and shut the mouths of the lions.  They have not hurt me…” (Daniel 6:22) The gates of hell were kicked open and men who were the vessels of Satan were cast into the lions’ den and crushed. (Daniel 6:24)  “The king was overjoyed…” (Daniel 6:23) and the devil was enraged because King Darius issued a decree saying, “[in] every part of [his] kingdom people must fear and [show] reverence [to the] God of Daniel.” (Daniel 6:26)

The church that has praying men such as Daniel come to the truth taught by Jesus Christ, “…the gates of Hades will not overcome [her].” (Matthew 16:18)  “The gates of hell” can have a two fold meaning here.  One interpretation is derived from the fact in Oriental cities the gate is a scene of deliberation and counsel.  Hence “the gates” here may represent the evil designs planned by the powers of hell to overthrow the church or to at least hinder the work of the gospel. (The Pulpit Commentary) This passage of Scripture can apply that the Body of Christ has enemies that fight against her and directly oppose the work of God.  She has enemies who oppose the spread of the gospel, corrupt God’s Word, and persecute faithful preachers and Christians.  (Baker’s Greek New Testament Library; Matthew Henry’s Commentary)

Considering the fact that Jesus is building His church, she will be victorious.  The application for us today through the life of Daniel is a praying church lays the foundation of a victorious church, thus enraging the devil and praying hell-shaking prayers. A praying servant of God is the scourge of Satan and his demons. She is a church that 1.) Expresses a true faith in prayer.  2.) Points people to God’s Sovereignty and addresses sin and 3.) Seeks God in prayer in Jesus’ Name regardless of what the law of men says.

A Day of Remembrance

 15 Minute Memorial Day Message

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of “Memorial Day.” There is also evidence that organized women’s groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War.  A hymn published in 1867, “Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping” by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication “To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead” (Source: Duke University’s Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920).
I would propose to you that it is not important who was the very first to celebrate “Memorial Day”.  What is important is that Memorial Day was established. “Memorial Day” is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.
What do we know about “Memorial Day?”  Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11.  It was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.  The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states.  It is now celebrated in almost every state on the last Monday of May.

In 1915, Moina Michael wrote a poem “In Flanders Fields,”  “We Cherish too, the Poppy Red…  That grows on fields where valor led…    It seems to signal to the skies…  that blood of heroes never die. She then conceived the idea to wear red poppies on “Memorial Day” in honor of those who died serving the nation during war. She was the first to wear one, and sold poppies to her friends and co-workers with the money going to benefit servicemen in need. Later a Madam Guerin from France was visiting the United States and learned of this new custom started by Ms. Michael. When she returned to France, she made artificial red poppies to raise money for war orphaned children and widowed women. This tradition spread to other countries. In 1921, the Franco-American Children’s League sold poppies nationally to benefit war orphans of France and Belgium. The League disbanded a year later and Madam Guerin approached the VFW for help. Shortly before “Memorial Day” in 1922 the VFW became the first veterans’ organization to nationally sell poppies. Two years later their “Buddy” Poppy program was selling artificial poppies made by disabled veterans. In 1948 the US Post Office honored Ms. Michael for her role in founding the National Poppy movement by issuing a red 3 cent postage stamp with her likeness on it.

Traditional observance of Memorial Day has diminished over the years. Many Americans today have forgotten the meaning and traditions of “Memorial Day.”  At many cemeteries, the graves of the fallen are increasingly ignored, neglected. Most people no longer remember the proper flag etiquette for the day. While there are towns and cities that still hold Memorial Day parades, many have not held a parade in decades. There are a few notable exceptions. Since the late 50’s on the Thursday before Memorial Day, the 1,200 soldiers of the 3d U.S. Infantry place small American flags at each of the more than 260,000 gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery. They then patrol 24 hours a day during the weekend to ensure that each flag remains standing.

We are blessed to have a President who knows the value observing “Memorial Day.”   From the heart he shared these words at Arlington National Cemetery at the “Memorial Day Commemoration” on May 31, 2004:”Through our history, America has gone to war reluctantly, because we have known the costs of war.  And the war on terror we’re fighting today has brought great costs of its own. Since the hour this nation was attacked, we have seen the character of the men and women who wear our country’s uniform as they fought battles to achieve victories.  These veterans of battle will carry with them for all their days the memory of the ones who did not live to be called veterans.”
“They will remember young soldiers like Captain Joshua Byers, a West Point man born in South Carolina who died in Iraq.  When this son of missionaries was given command of a 120-man combat unit, he wrote this to his parents: ‘I will give the men everything I have to give. I love them already, just because they’re mine. I pray, with all my heart, that I will be able to take every single one of them home safe when we finish our mission here.'”

Those who risked their lives on our behalf are often very clear about what matters most in their own lives, and they tell it to those they love.  Listen to these words written by Master Sergeant Kelly Hornbeck, of the Special Forces, who was killed in action last January, south of Samarra.  He wrote this to his parents back in Fort Worth, Texas: “I am not afraid, and neither should either of you be — For I trust in my God and my training, two powerful forces that cannot be fully measured.” Although the burden of grief cannot not be easily done away with and the sadness over an unfinished life easily laid aside, it must be understood that completeness of a life is not measured in length only. It is measured in the deeds and commitments that give a life its purpose. And the commitment of these lives was clear to all: They defended our nation, they liberated the oppressed, they served the cause of peace.  All Americans who have known the loss and sadness of war, whether recently or long ago, can know this: The person they love and miss is honored and remembered by the United States of America.

On May 26, 2003 the president of the of the United States of America closed his address to those listening in Arlington, Virginia with the true story of a Army Ranger, Captain Russell Rippetoe who was laid to rest.  He shared how valiantly he gave his life and served with distinction of purpose in “Operation Iraqi Freedom.”  He had earned the “Bronze Star” and the “Purple Heart.” At Russell’s funeral, his father Lieutenant Colonel Joe Rippetoe gave the farewell salute at the grave of his only son.  During that farewell he read what was engraved on his son’s dog tags, words from the Book of Joshua that gave this grieving father comfort, “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of good courage. Be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed, for the Lord thy God is with thee.” Captain Russell Rippetoe joined a noble company of service and sacrifice of men and women who were strong and courageous and did not back off of their call and duty to the United States of America.

The Presidential Prayer team is asking that all in America take time to remember those who not only have served their country with their lives, but take time this day to remember those who are in harms way.  Listen to the Word of the Lord found 1 Samuel 12:23-24 “As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right. But be sure to fear the LORD and serve Him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things He has done for you.”

Catching the Miracles of Christmas

“The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)

Miracles are an absolutely essential element in Christianity.  If Jesus Christ is not God manifested in the flesh, then our faith is a silly myth.  If He did not rise from the dead in bodily form, with the grave being empty and His appearance being recognizable, then we are yet in our sins and, of all people, the most miserable.  If the miracle of grace is not verifiable in the transformation of the life of the one who puts his faith and trust in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, then our Christian gospel is a miserable fraud.  (The New International Dictionary of the Bible) C.S. Lewis gives this definition, “A miracle is an interference with nature by supernatural power.”  One of the greatest miracles to have ever taken place was in Bethlehem a little over 2,000 years ago, when God interfered with the natural way of bringing children into this world through a virgin who gave birth to a child.

Listen as I read about one of the greatest miracles of all, John 1:14, “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14) Pray!

I would propose to you that one of the best ways to grasp the joys of Christmas is to fully understand and be prepared to tell others about the miracles of Christmas. Many people including Christians, too often focus on the manger, the stable, and many of the other earthly surroundings of the birth of Christ but miss the truths and purposes of God becoming man. Just what are the four miracles that took place during that first Christmas season? Christians need to understand and be able to teach others who came at Christmas, how He came, who He came to and the benefits of His coming.

Image of the invisible God

Christians need to take the event of the birth of Christ and point people to the miracles that took place at the time of His birth.  One being God’s coming to earth.

The world stood amazed and watched as man walked on the moon.  They need to know, however, that there was a much more amazing event that took place in Bethlehem.  Christ while keeping His Deity, came as a baby and walked this earth for 30 plus years.  Christmas is not the celebration of the beginning of Jesus Christ, it is the celebration of His arrival on earth.  It must be understood and taught that Jesus’ true beginnings were not in a stable. Colossians 1:15-17 says, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.  For by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”  (Colossians 1:15-17)

The Holy Spirit wants you to catch this in the first division of today’s message, He is the image of the invisible God.”  The key word is “image” (eikon) and here it means that Jesus is the image of God indicating the revelatory character of the incarnation. Yes Jesus is man; however, His character is the exact representation of God. (Word Study Dictionary of the New Testament; Word meaning in the New Testament)  Jesus is not a feeble copy.  He is the illumination of, the very essence of the heart of God.  Our Lord said, “…Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father.” (John 14:9)    Jesus is the manifestation of God, literally displaying and proving the very existence of God.

The apostle Paul writes in Colossians 1:19 that “…God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in [Jesus].”  (Colossians 1:19)   Jesus is a portrait of God not a mere sketch.  In Jesus you see the characteristics and the distinguishing marks of God.  If you want to see what God is like you must look to Christ.  Get a Biblical understanding of Jesus and the Holy Spirit will give you revelation of God. This Greek word for image (eikon) is sometimes a diminutive form of another Greek word (eikonion) meaning portrait.  It is the equivalent to our word photograph.  It is also used when referring to a legal document which is drawn up for a receipt or an IOU.  It always includes a description of the chief parties, so that there are no mistakes to all who are involved in the agreement.

I read a story about a boy whose dad went off to World War II for many years. The boy was just a toddler when his dad went away. Before he went away, dad made sure that he left a portrait of himself for his son. After a while the boy forgot about his dad as a person. He would look at the portrait of his dad more and more frequently and say, “If only Dad could step out of the picture and be real.”

When Jesus was conceived in Mary’s womb by the Holy Spirit, the Word which painted the portrait of Christ stepped out of heaven, the Word became flesh and He is the perfect replica, the precise copy, the image of the Father who made the promise of sending a Savior who would save mankind from their sins.  He is more than a picture, He can be known and Jesus makes known to us the image of God and who is God in the flesh.  According to the Word of God and the testimony of the Holy Spirit who brings revelation and illumination of the written Word, there is nothing more necessary for God to do in order to show His love for us.

God so loved the world He gave His one and only Son and the Son willingly gave His life on the Cross of Calvary and God by the Holy Spirit raised Jesus from the dead.  (John 3:16; John 10:14-18; Romans 8:11) Religion that focuses on a baby in manger is just dead religion.  But true Christianity grasps the truth that the One who laid in that manger is the very image of God, the very One who created all the things in heaven and earth.  He controls all kingdoms, powers and rulers and is the one who holds all things together. (Colossians 1:15-17)  Christians who understand, grasp and can teach this truth are Christians who enjoy the forgiveness of God, find peace of mind and their purpose in serving the Lord.

Being made in human likeness

There was much more than just a baby lying in the manger on that night in Bethlehem.  He was God coming to earth.  Another miracle worth grasping about Christmas is that Jesus is God in the flesh and yet fully man. Philippians 2:6-8: “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself…”  (Philippians 2:6-8a)

The words the Apostle Paul use in this passage of Scripture are chosen with great care to show the absolute reality that Jesus is God in the flesh as well as truly being man. He is flesh and blood just as you and I.  The writer of the Book of Hebrews tells us the great benefit of the Lord becoming man.

“Since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.  For surely it is not angels He helps, but Abraham’s descendants.  For this reason He had to be made like His brothers in every way, in order that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that He might make atonement for the sins of the people.  Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.” (Hebrews 2:14-18)

Satan, the first sinner, is very powerful and effective in taking those who do not have Jesus Christ as personal Savior and Lord and putting them into the bondage of sin.  Just as Satan wanted to dethrone God, he finds those who have dead souls and unprotected hearts and causes them to dethrone God in their lives. This causes mankind to curse and reject the Lord, ignore God’s will for them and neglect His teachings. They do not seek Him for guidance nor use their talents and abilities for His glory but for their own pleasures. These people live lives marred by the acts of the sinful nature spelled out in Galatians 5:19-21.

Now is a good time to repeat that familiar phrase, “Jesus was born to die.”   He could not have been tempted as we are, lived a life of victory over sin unless He was of flesh and blood.  Being man, the sins of the world were able to be laid upon Him.  1 John 3:8 says, “…The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.” (1 John 3:8)  The devil’s work was destroyed on the Cross of Christ. (Matthew Henry, Barnes Notes, The Expositors Bible Commentary) Colossians 2:15 says, “And having disarmed the powers and authorities [of Satan].  He, [Jesus] made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”  (Colossians 3:8)

Christians who have come under the blood of Christ are now able to get victory over the flesh, the world, and the devil.  The Apostle Paul writes, “For [God] has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves.” (Colossians 1:13-14)

Jesus coming to earth with the chief purpose of redeeming fallen mankind gave us a Savior, Priest or rather a Shepherd who is able to help those who are being tempted.  The Greek word for “tempted” (peirazo) here can mean to try men by adversity, to test their faith and confidence in God. The Bible says, Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.” (Hebrews 12:18)  “Help” (boetho) meaning that Jesus will run to our aid at the hearing of a cry for help in times of suffering and pain, trials and temptations.  He can give help and deliverance. (The Complete Word Study; The Preacher’s Outline & Sermon Bible)   He has been made like us in flesh and blood in order to sympathize with us and come to our aid and deliverance in compassion and as a Savior who is victorious.

Christians who understand what Jesus’ coming as man has purchased for them, become like Dietrich Bonhoeffer who wrote to his twin sister, “It is good to learn early enough that suffering and God are not contradictions but rather unity, for the idea that God Himself is suffering when we suffer is one of the most convincing teachings of Christianity.  I think God is nearer to suffering than to happiness, and to experience [the presence of the Lord in trials and temptations gives way toward peace and rest and gains a strong and courageous heart.]” (Citation: Dietrich Bonhoeffer, in a letter to his twin sister, Sabine. Christian History, no. 32)

I once read the testimony of a young lady who had let Satan lie to her about how she was worthless.  At the age of 12 she began sleeping around, doing drugs and drinking and she gave her family a hard time by punishing them with her attitude because of unforgiveness and bitterness.  She felt everyone who actually trying to help her where against her.  One evening the family had to call the police because she had gotten so out of control.  Over the course of just a few years she had been in and out of several mental hospitals.  Drugs, drinking and a non productive life caused her to begin to hear voices. She finally responded to a brother’s invitation to start attending a Bible believing church and there the Lord met her cry for help and He touched her.  She has sensed His presence in her life ever since that day when she received Christ as her personal Savior and Lord.  She writes, “He restored my broken heart and now I am stronger than I have ever been.  I am also now in Bible College and I plan to become a youth pastor.”   (Bec James:SheLovesGod.com)

Jesus, being born of the flesh, can minister to those born in the lowliest state for He was born in a stable. (Luke 2:7)   He can minister to the poor for He was born to poor parents. (Luke 2:24)  He can minister to those who are raised in despicable places and poor religious conditions. (John 1:46; The New International Dictionary of the Bible) Jesus knows how to come to the aid of those who are opposed by the religious and rejected by their listeners. (Mark 14:1-2; Matthew 13:53-58) He can minister to those who are being accused of being out of their minds and possessed by demons while serving God. (Mark 3”21-22) He can comfort those who have been betrayed by a co-worker in the work of God. (Mark 14:10-11)  He can strengthen those who have been deserted in the heat of persecution. (Mark 15:50) He can strengthen those who stand before courts being falsely accused. (John 18:33)  And He will be at the side of those who are being executed for the cause of Christ under false charges. (John 19:16)

The writer of the Book of Hebrews gives us this awesome promise about the Christ who is born of flesh and blood, “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.  For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin.  Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrews 4:14-16)

Jesus came through and came to common people

The blessings of having Christ being man born of flesh and blood, being fully man goes on and on and on.  Testimony after testimony can be shared by those who have grasped the truths of Christmas, Jesus being fully man and God.  Another truth worth grasping is that Jesus came through and came to common people.

Luke 2:7 says, “and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped Him in cloths and placed Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”    Luke 2:8-11 says, “And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.  An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord.’”  The Bible goes on to say, “When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.’  So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen Him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child,” (Luke 2:15-17)

The Lord came through and came to common people.  The King of the universe was not born in a king’s palace nor was His birth announced first to the priesthood.  No, He was conceived in a poor woman, Mary, who was simply a willing vessel of the Lord and a kingdom seeker.  I love Mary’s answer to the angel Gabriel, (Luke 1:26)  I am the Lord’s servant…  May it be to me as you have said.” (Luke 1:38)  She was submissive to the Lord’s will for her.

The secret to grasping the truths and joy of Christmas is to be a willing humble common person sold out to the cause of Christ. There is something worth grasping about these shepherds who were most likely devout men seeking the kingdom of God.  They were servants about their business ready to receive the good news God was about to give them through the angels.

Take note, no one is out of the way of a divine visit of the Holy Spirit of God.  The call of God to hear the good news can come at anytime and the privilege of spreading the good news to others will come to those who are diligently working in their callings.  These shepherds were obedient, diligently doing their work; they were not sleeping, but keeping watch. Christians must have a willingness to spread all they know about Jesus Christ.  There can be no slumbering, nor wishing they were somewhere else, but faithfulness to their call and having a heart hungry and ready to pass on what God’s Word says about Christ.

We might live through Him

Christmas came to common people and Jesus came for our benefit.  So Christians may no longer be bound by sin but be changed and set free to live a life of righteousness, walking in fellowship with God, Christ and in step with the Holy Spirit.

1 John 4:9 says, “This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him.” (1 John 4:9) There is a huge difference between existence and true life.  All of mankind who walk upon this earth are existing but not all have life that is truly satisfying and pleasing to God.  A famous doctor once said that men would find a cure for cancer more quickly than they would find a cure for selfish living.  Jesus Christ gives Christians His purpose for their existence and directions for which they are to live.  He gives them the heart desire and the strength to live pleasing lives to God.  This life in Christ brings peace and this living turns mere existence into fullness of a life that testifies to the Lord’s mercy and grace. Jesus explained clearly why He came to this earth.  John 18:37 says, “…In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth.” (John 18:37) “Truth” (alethia) here means that Jesus would testify to divine truth or true faith found only in and through Him. He is the key source of understanding the true gospel and in the declaration of the will of the One true God.  He through the Holy Spirit of truth can guide in true worship as opposed to heathen practices. (The Complete Word Study Dictionary of the New Testament) Heathen practice today is that worldly thinking among men that wants to recognize God only when it seems to be beneficial to them.

For instance, when a tragedy strikes our nations borders, then prayer is okay.  However, to seek God in prayer for daily guidance is a violation of a so called “Separation of Church and State.”  There is a worldly opinion that Christ should not be mentioned nor worshiped publicly during the Christmas Holiday season because it may offend others. Biblical truth is that the Children of God are to “…pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayer.” (Ephesians 6:18)  Truth is that the only reason for this season is to celebrate the birth of Christ.  To rob God of the worship due to Him and call it “Happy Holidays” so stores can have record sales for the year is to rob God for financial gain.

In John 10:10 He says, “…I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10)  It is because of Jesus that God will send His Holy Spirit into the lives of Christians.  Thus, they may live a full life walking with the Lord and exercising their Holy Spirit gifts under the guidance of sacrificial love.  All this for the cause of Christ and for the benefit of all they serve. Grasp the truths of Christmas this holy season and pray for opportunities to tell others about the miracle of God’s coming to Earth when Jesus was born in Bethlehem.  Grasp the benefits of Jesus being fully man so He can be the compassionate Shepherd to the Children of God.  Let the Holy Spirit place so deep within your heart the truth that Christ through the Spirit of Christ indwells common people and makes great use of them.  Lastly, meditate upon the benefits of Christ coming.
